Although with both 1st & 2nd class buses there are departures pretty much all day every day from the larger population centers. A driver however can indeed be more efficient & flexible, if you can afford it, than taxi/bus/taxi and you're not subject to a bus company schedule. But it would seem that with your relatively short time in each city that there wouldn't be many of those. Unless there's some special destination that isn't easily reached by public transportation. I agree with the others about taking buses rather than hiring a driver. It is quick, efficient and arguably safer than a car and driver though there may be some journeys where that works out better. Like Fr_diavolo, I would seriously consider the bus system for getting around in Mexico. Lots to see in Mexico City and its environs and that will likely be your focus but maybe a day less there? Personally, I would want to spend a min of 3 nights anywhere which allows two full days of sightseeing. To the north Morelia/Patzcuaro/ Guatjuato/Zacatecas If you wanted to stick to the south then Puebla and Oaxaca could make a good match. Seems I never got around to posting about many of the places we visited. Some photos and details of our time in Mexico. I would take a look at a map and Guanjuato and Puebla are on opposite side of Mexico City so that will likely add to the transfer time. Other places we loved within relatively easy reach of Mexico City were Zacatecas, Morelia and Patzcuaro. We only spent a night in Queratero so cant really judge but it didn't make the cut in my pre trip research. We loved Guanjuato and Puebla and would be happy revisiting should we return to Mexico at some point.
